SOLIDWORKS 2018 What’s New – Broken-Out Section Views – #SW2018
With SOLIDWORKS 2018, you can now add Broken-Out Section Views to Alternate Position Views, Detail Views, and Section Views in your drawings. Broken-Out Section Views are useful when you need to cut away a portion of an assembly in order to expose inner details within the same drawing view. The steps for creating a Broken-Out Section View are the same whether you are adding the Broken-Out Section View to an Alternate Position View, a Detail View, or a Section View. Follow the steps below to create a Broken-Out Section View:
- Create an Alternate Position View, a Detail View, or a Section View in your drawing.
- Click Insert > Drawing View > Broken-out Section
- Use the spline tool that automatically appears to sketch a closed profile around the area that you would like a Broken-out Section View of.
- Choose options in Section View Section Scope dialog box and click OK.
- Specify the Depth or choose an edge of the model as a Depth Reference in Property Manager and click OK.
Broken-Out Section Views on Alternate Position View
Alternate Position Views show the range of motion of an assembly by displaying the alternate position in phantom font. By adding the ability to create a Broken-out Section View to an Alternate Position Drawing View in SOLIDWORKS 2018, you can provide more detail in your drawings. However, it is important to note that you cannot add broken-out section views to the alternate position shown in phantom font – only to the reference configuration.
The Broken-Out Section View is shown in the drawing below by the hatched lines due to the “Auto hatching” box checked in the PropertyManager.
Broken-Out Section Views on Detail View
Detail Views are used in drawings to show a portion of a view at an enlarged scale. The image below shows a Broken-Out Section View on a Detail View in SOLIDWORKS 2018 at a depth that exposes the counterbore.
Broken-Out Section Views on Section View
Section Views are used in drawings to show internal features of a part by using a straight or offset section line. In SOLIDWORKS 2018, you can easily create a Broken-Out Section View on a Section View in order to expose even more internal features of the part within the same drawing view, as depicted in the image below. In this example, I used the hole as the “Depth Reference” instead of specifying a particular depth.
After adding a Broken-Out Section View to Alternate Position Views, Detail Views, or Section Views in SOLIDWORKS 2018, you can edit the definition of it to change the depth, or you can edit the sketch that was used to create it. To do this, simply right click “Broken-out Section” in your Feature Manager tree under the Alternate Position View, Detail View, or Section View and choose either “Edit Definition” or “Edit Sketch”.
